Best Clean & Natural SPF Lip Balms

I debated whether to write another list-icle on sunscreen lip balms, because quite honestly, there is a dearth of good sunscreen lip balms that are clean and organic. The vast majority of them, even from clean beauty brands, use the most common UV filters like homosalate and avobenzone – which I’m ok with using from time to time but definitely not on my lips because I’ll end up ingesting it while sipping my pina colada. Even among the truly clean lip balm sunscreens, it’s rare you’ll find an SPF 30 (97% UV protection) one with most offering SPF 15 (93% UV protection). And ironically, some of the worst brands like Sun Bum actually have a clean mineral lip SPF product. I have selected just a small handful of SPF lip balms made of clean ingredients and provide some real sun protection.

Salt & Stone Sunscreen Lip Balm SPF 30

This an all-natural mineral lip balm that actually provides SPF 30 with zinc oxide. It lightens the lips slightly because of the mineral filter.

Raw Elements Lip Rescue Sunscreen SPF 30

Unless they’ve changed the original formula, this organic sunscreen lip balm can be a bit gritty in texture, but gets the job done. Raw Elements lip sunscreen provides the most protection out of any with 23% non-nano zinc oxide. It will give a white cast to the lips but this brand was made for outdoor enthusiasts who care about sun protection and not aesthetics. I personally prefer Raw Elements’ tinted cool-toned pink version called Pink Shimmer (don’t worry, there’s no shimmer).

Cocokind Tinted Lip Shield SPF 24

Cocokind’s lip sunscreen is more of a makeup product as it has a deep coral shade and feels like a highly moisturizing lip gloss.

Ingredients: zinc oxide 5.6%, homosalate 8%, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, polyhydroxystearic acid, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax, butyrospermum parkii (shea) nut extract, squalane, jojoba esters, rhus verniciflua peel wax, caprylic/capric triglyceride, polyglyceryl-3 polyricinoleate, isostearic acid, lecithin, ascorbyl palmitate, glycerin, averrhoa carambola fruit extract, tocopherol, octyldodecanol, sorbitan oleate, alumina, magnesium oxide, flavor. 

Coola Tinted Mineral Liplux SPF 30 (Nude Beach & Skinny Dip ONLY)

Coola offers a mineral SPF 30 tinted lip balm in several shades, but only the Nude Beach and Skinny Dip shades are truly clean. All use titanium dioxide and zinc oxide for UV protection, but the other shades include artificial colorants. Of course, this is what many “clean makeup” brands do anyways like ILIA, Kosas, etc.
